We made a significant investment in 2014 by making a £150,000 investment into the premises and the equipment in order to launch our fabrication division. This allowed us to extend our premises with a newly-built 3400 sq. ft. specialised workshop. Also included as part of the initial investment was a new five-tonne overhead gantry crane for moving steel items and a new metal working machine for pounding and cropping steel.
An initial £150,000 investment in premises and equipment was made by SBu based in Lingerfield near Knaresborough, in launching SBu Fabrication
In 2016 we made a further investment in order to improve the equipment within the division; this was in-line with us achieving the complex quality standard of the EN1090 up to execution class 2. This qualification allows us to fabricate structural steel and erect steel for larger construction projects and provide project management. All equipment is fully calibrated and in order to make sure that we are achieving the required standards of the yearly audit.
“Achieving this quality standard has been arduous but it is our biggest achievement in the last five years and we believe it will bring long-term benefits to our business and local construction professionals who now have an accredited business on their doorstep.
The successful assessment means that our work is to the same high standard as CE marked steel. It allows us to fabricate and erect sizeable steel structures, such as frames for residential and commercial buildings; warehouse extensions; temporary steel buildings and large external fire escapes, and provide a turnkey service by project managing their installation.
Achieving this accreditation will assist the local construction industry by helping companies reduce unnecessary delays and costs by having someone close by so they can complete schemes within agreed schedules and budgets.
The accreditation is so complex that it wouldn’t be cost effective for very small fabrication businesses to operate under the EN1090 and big steel fabricators will not offer the same cost benefits that we do.” – Keith Swales, CEO of SBu.
At SBu we also have CAD capabilities to complement our fabrication department, this allows us to improve the quality of design, improve communications through documentation and produce precision drawings. All paperwork is filed away for each job on our system to ensure we have all of the information required.
